The Seventh Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance voted 9-0 (with one member absent) to recommend that Judge Sandra K. Miller BE RETAINED.

Judge Miller was appointed to the Delta County bench in March of 2001 and took the bench on April 1, 2001.  Prior to appointment, Judge Miller practiced law on the Western Slope since 1991.  Judge Miller received her undergraduate degree from Texas A&M in 1984 and graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1987.  Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Miller practiced law in both the public and private sector, practicing as an appellate court briefing attorney, private practitioner, and Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Seventh Judicial District.  Judge Miller is active in community service activities, continues to edit a section of the DUI Benchbook annually, and was instrumental in organizing the monthly conference call for all County Court Judges in the Seventh Judicial District in an effort to provide support and information.

The Commission conducted a personal interview with Judge Miller, reviewed opinions she authored, observed her in Court, reviewed comments received from interested parties during the evaluation, and reviewed survey responses from attorneys and non-attorneys who had experience with Judge Miller.  Among the survey questions was, “How strongly do you recommend Judge Miller be retained in office, or not be retained in office?”  Of attorneys completing the survey 96% recommended she be retained.  Of non-attorneys completing surveys 88% recommended she be retained.

Judge Miller presides over criminal and civil matters this term.  In addition, Judge Miller is acting District Judge for the Delta County Treatment Court. Based on the survey results of attorneys and non-attorneys, she received an overall score of 3.7 out of 4.0. Judge Miller also received high marks in case management, application and knowledge of the law, diligence, communication, and demeanor.  Judge Miller demonstrates a strong aptitude for managing a very heavy docket and caseload and works diligently to maintain an efficient and productive courtroom.
