Colorado Court of Appeals

Honorable Steve C. Briggs

Retention year: 1994
Recommendation: Retain

Judge Briggs was admitted to the Bar of Colorado in 1975. He was a law clerk to the Honorable Alfred A. Arraj of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado for one year and served as an assistant attorney general assigned to the anti-trust section of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office from 1976 through 1978. Judge Briggs was in the private practice of law in Boulder from 1978 until his appointment to the Colorado Court of Appeal in May 1992.

Judge Briggs has been actively involved in civic, community and charitable activities. He has devoted time to get legal and judicial education programs by teaching at the University of Colorado School of Law and an adjunct professor and lecturing at seminars for lawyers and judges. Judge Briggs has a particular interest in mediation and has received specialized training in that field. He hopes to be involved in the creation of a settlement director for the Colorado Court of Appeals to pursue settlement of cases pending before the court.

Judge Briggs indicated that his paramount goals as a judge of the Court of Appeals are to decide cases on a principled basis and to honor the separation of powers between the three branches of government. The opinions he has authored for the Court of Appeals as viewed by the commission and trial judges of this state reflect adherence to those goals. The Commission believes that Judge Briggs is a very positive addition to the Colorado Court of Appeals.

The State Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Steven C. Briggs BE RETAINED.
