Judge Jerry C. Nelson was appointed as an El Paso County Court Judge in 1978. After serving honorably in the United States Navy, he attended the University of Nebraska where he received his undergraduate degree in 1962. In 1965, he graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Law where he received his juris doctorate.

Prior to being appointed to the county court bench, Judge Nelson was engaged in private practice, he then served as an Assistant City Attorney and Chief Prosecutor for the Lincoln, Nebraska City Attorney’s Office. From 1973, until his appointment to the bench, Judge Nelson was a Deputy District Attorney and Chief Prosecutor for the 4th Judicial District.

Judge Nelson received very high ratings among those polled. Ninety percent of the attorneys polled voted to retain him. Several comments were made by the attorneys which would indicate he is an excellent, hard-working, and knowledgeable judge.

Other groups polled, including jurors, litigants, law enforcement, and courthouse staff recommended that Judge Nelson be retained. Eighty-five percent of the jurors polled recommended retention, with 14.3% expressing no opinion.

Comments from the litigants were favorable, stating Judge Nelson “went as far as possible to insure that all parties were treated fairly.”

Other groups polled voted by a majority of over half to recommend retention, the rest having no opinion. Courthouse personnel voted unanimously for retention.

The 4th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Jerry C. Nelson be retained.
