Judge Newton graduated from Colorado State University with a major in Economics in 1956. He worked in business in Akron, Ohio, for nearly two years, served in the U.S. Army two years, and then worked again in business in Denver from 1959 to 1964.

Judge Newton obtained his law degree from the University of Denver in June 1964 and was admitted to the Bar in September 1964. He practiced privately in Fort Collins from 1964 to January 1983, when he was appointed to the judiciary. He hears criminal, civil, domestic, and mental health cases for the district.

Evaluations of Judge Newton by survey respondents were generally good. There was a feeling he tended to be too slow in delivering judgments, but this balanced against comments that his judgements were thoughtful and fair. Charges of gender bias were equally split between those who thought him biased against women and those who saw him biased against men.

The 8th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Arnaud Newton be retained.
