The Thirteenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge Carl S. McGuire III BE RETAINED.

Judge McGuire studied agricultural economics at Colorado State University and received his JD from the University of Wyoming .  He is an active member of the Akron Lions Club and volunteers in the local schools.  Judge McGuire also teaches at Northeastern Junior College .  He considers community service important because it allows the community to see the human side of the judiciary.

Judge McGuire was appointed to the Washington County Court bench in November, 2004.  His caseload in county court consists of 25% civil, 40% traffic, and 35% misdemeanor cases.  Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge McGuire was a member of the Judge Advocate General corps and engaged in private practice in Akron .  He maintains a part-time private practice in partnership with another attorney, with offices in Brush.

As a new judge, Judge McGuire approaches his job with enthusiasm and energy.  He keeps a close eye on the progress of cases in his court, and has implemented procedures to ensure that correct information on case progress is reported to the state.  He is perceived as fair, honest and respectful to litigants.

Both attorneys and non-attorneys surveyed scored Judge McGuire above the average for all county judges.  He received consistently high marks for case management and communications.  Of those who stated an opinion about retention, 86% of attorneys and 98% of non-attorneys surveyed recommended retention of Judge McGuire in office, while 14% of attorneys and 2% of non-attorneys somewhat recommended that he not be retained in office.
