The Sixteenth Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance unanimously recommends that Judge M. Jon Kolomitz BE RETAINED.

Judge Kolomitz was appointed to the District Court bench for the Sixteenth Judicial District in February of 1985. He has served as Chief Judge for the Sixteenth Judicial District since 1987. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Kolomitz was with the FBI for three years and was in private practice in La Junta, Colorado for 16 years. During the years he had a private practice, Judge Kolomitz was also the City of La Junta Municipal Judge for 14 years. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado, where he also received his law degree in 1966. 

During his time in La Junta, Judge Kolomitz has been extensively involved in community service organizations and is a past member and president of the La Junta School Board. Judge Kolomitz currently participates in many judicial organizations, including a state-federal coordinating committee, and a judicial legislative information group. Judge Kolomitz is very committed to advancing the position of the Judiciary in the State of Colorado.

The Commission reviewed written evaluations of Judge Kolomitz from attorneys and non-attorneys, including written verbatim comments attached to the evaluation questionnaires. The Commission also considered a written self-evaluation completed by Judge Kolomitz and conducted a personal interview with Judge Kolomitz. 

Judge Kolomitz is committed to his position as a District Judge. He decides factual disputes impartially and he applies the law fairly. He has a great respect for the rule of law, but he also uses his role as a Judge to provide justice for the parties in his Court.

Judge Kolomitz received high ratings from both attorneys and non-attorneys in virtually every category, including the areas of communication, proper judicial temperament, treating participants with respect, giving the proceedings a sense of dignity, and treating everyone involved politely. Of the attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 100% recommended that Judge Kolomitz be retained in office. Of the non-attorneys responding to the questionnaire, 91% recommended retention and 9% recommended non-retention.
